The Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano), founded in 1863, is the largest technical university in Italy, with about 42,000 students. The university offers undergraduate, graduate and higher education courses in engineering, architecture and design.

The Politecnico di Milano has two main campuses in the city of Milan, Italy, where the majority of the research and teaching activities are located, as well as other satellite campuses in five other cities across the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna regions.

According to the QS World University Rankings for the subject area 'Engineering & Technology', Politecnico ranked in 2022 as the 13th best in the world. It ranked 6th worldwide for Design, 9th for Civil and Structural Engineering, 9th for Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering and 7th for Architecture. Its notable alumni or professors include Nobel laureate Giulio Natta and architects Renzo Piano and Aldo Rossi.

At the Politecnico 12 departments are active with 246 Research Labs, 34 Interdepartmental laboratories and 6 Large infrastructures. Three large infrastructures are active in the Mobility Sector, namely the Driving Simulator Lab, the Laboratory for the Safety of Transport and the Wind Tunnel. Other three large infrastructures refer to Material Testing, Photonics, Multidisciplinary Makerspace.

Almost one fourth of the researches at Politecnico di Milano are directly or indirectly related to mobility.

Recently the Politecnico di Milano has obtained a funding of 320mln € from the National Government and European Union to coordinate the National Center for Sustainable Mobility, a network of 49 partners (25 Universities and 24 big companies) to foster research in multimodal transportation according to Fit for 55 Agenda.

International activities

Politecnico di Milano participates in prestigious international networks alongside the main European technical universities: IDEA League, Alliance for Tech, Enhance.

Politecnico is part of 5 KICs

Politecnico has a cooperation with Xi'an Jiaotong University, a joint Centre of 10000 m2 has been operational since September 2019.

Politecnico has a joint platform with Tsinghua University, the most important Chinese University.

Within Europe, the Driving Simulator Lab is linked, through the Lombardy Mobility Cluster, to the Four Motors for Europe, an Association of the Governments of four EU Regions, namely Lombardy, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Rhone-Alps and Catalunia.
